Nkumu Katalay: A Voice of Congolese Culture, Artistry, and Social Change

Welcome to the world of Nkumu Katalay, an artist, orator, multi-instrumentalist, and social activist whose mission is to promote humanity through the vibrant lens of Congolese culture. Born in Kinshasa, the pulsating heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and now based in New York City, Nkumu embodies the spirit of cultural bridge-building. His vision is clear: to highlight the profound contributions of Congolese heritage to modern world history while inspiring unity and understanding across communities. Through his multifaceted career in music, dance, education, and advocacy, Nkumu Katalay is not just an artist—he’s a movement.

A Journey Shaped by Sound and Struggle Nkumu’s story begins in the dynamic streets of Kinshasa, where he was raised by his resilient Congolese mother, Jeanine Katalay Ikolo, amidst a challenging yet culturally rich environment. As the eldest of nine siblings, his early life was marked by both responsibility and the rhythms of his surroundings. At 15, he relocated to NYC to join his Guinean father, Ibrahim Diallo, embarking on a transformative journey that blended two worlds—Kinshasa’s raw energy and New York’s boundless diversity. These cities, both melting pots of culture, shaped his deep appreciation for humanity and fueled his lifelong fascination with music as a universal language. To Nkumu, “musical notes or beats are pieces of cultures residing within the realm of sound, and their interactions make music.” Much like cultures, which are fragments of history seeking new expressions, music became his cornerstone—a way to navigate the world and piece together his identity.

Artistic Brilliance: A Musical and Dance Innovator Nkumu’s artistic journey is a celebration of Congolese roots with a global resonance. As the founder of The “Life Long Project” Band, he leads a musical ensemble dedicated to pushing positive narratives of Congolese culture through vibrant sounds, social initiatives, and educational outreach. His style, rooted in the traditional Congolese “Mbonda” or “Ngoma” (drum) and dynamic movements of dance, is a hybrid of Afro-Diaspora influences, reflecting a tapestry of genres that speak to global audiences. Having shared stages with Congolese legends like Fally Ipupa, Koffi Olomide, and Gims at iconic venues such as the Apollo Theater, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center, Nkumu has proven his prowess as a band leader and performer. His six-year tenure with the renowned Soukous Stars earned him three awards, and with performances in five states and a goal to reach all 50, he continues to spread the infectious rhythms of Soukous and Congolese music across the U.S.

Beyond music, Nkumu is the visionary behind the Afro Congolese Dance program and company, offering weekly mental and physical dance activities throughout NYC. From schools and corporations to cultural centers, these programs engage participants of all ages—children, adults, and seniors—using dance, folklore, drumming, and storytelling to foster cultural connection and personal growth. Through movement and sound, Nkumu taps into what he calls the “dialectic space of humanity,” expressing three forms of justice—cultural, social, and global—that define human struggles and aspirations.

Cultural Diplomacy and Community Impact Nkumu’s influence transcends the stage, positioning him as a cultural diplomat and community leader. Representing Francophone Africa at events like the 2024 Francophonie celebration at Lycée Français of NYC and performing at the United Nations for Congo’s Security Council campaign, he amplifies African voices on global platforms. His international engagements, including a U.S. Embassy jazz initiative in the Ivory Coast and the Red Card Campaign against violence in South Africa alongside Queen Mother Makhadzi, showcase his commitment to cultural exchange and social advocacy. In 2023, he performed at the Nwali Festival and collaborated with South African star Makhadzi, using his art to combat discrimination and violence against women and girls.

Closer to home, Nkumu’s return to Kinshasa in November 2024—after 28 years—marked a deeply emotional milestone. Teaching workshops to 900 students at his childhood school, Sifa, and delivering a live concert in the inner city with his band and dancers, he aimed to revive hope, combat gang violence, and spread messages of peace to Kinshasa’s youth. In NYC, as vice president of Congo Youth Coalition Inc., which he co-founded, Nkumu drives initiatives like NYC Summer Streets and advocacy for recognizing August 2nd as Congolese Genocide Day. His work with the UN and the International Peace Institute further underscores his dedication to youth empowerment and gender equality.

Education and Social Advocacy: Building Bridges for the FutureWith over 15 years as an early childhood educator in NYC, Nkumu uses his talents to inspire through workshops on dance, music, and storytelling wherever his art takes him. His plans for a cultural exchange program with the U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa aim to deepen connections between communities. As an artistic ambassador for FONAREV, a Congolese fund for victims of sexual violence, and through performances at expos addressing the Congolese genocide, Nkumu leverages art to address critical social issues. His 2025 release of original songs like “Nazo Bela,” “Maza Kuyobila,” and “Dance Nko Nko” further showcases his orchestral style and cultural pride, inviting listeners into his world of sound and meaning.
